O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm about the performance. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were awed at her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the lower three again. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol right away.
